The film follows Ben Barber (Kevin Hart), a fast-talking high school security guard who dreams of becoming a police officer. Before he can marry his girlfriend, Angela, he must first win the approval of her brother, James Payton (Ice Cube)—a tough-as-nails Atlanta detective.
To prove he's man enough for the family, Ben joins James on a "ride along" through the streets of Atlanta. What starts as a series of pranks to scare Ben quickly turns dangerous as they accidentally stumble upon a genuine criminal investigation involving an arms dealer named Omar.
